Ms. Shirley Miller, kindergarten teacher at Bluebonnet Elementary, is the BES representative on a team of teachers from six BISD campuses working to bring students' authentic writing into community spaces. In partnership with the Heart of Texas Writing Project and funded by a national LRNG Innovator Challenge grant, Ms. Miller is studying the research behind writing process instruction and implementing practices that support students' reading and writing success.
Students in Ms. Miller's class choose their own topics, study published texts to apply author's craft to their own writing, and integrate technology to reach a broader audience. In November, Ms. Miller's class published their narrative stories at Berdoll's Pecan Candy and Gift Company with QR codes and audio of kids' voices telling their stories. This spring, their digital ABC book will be shared with another class in the US or internationally via the edu.buncee.com Buncee Buddies program. Students are also creating individual ABC books that they will display at the Bastrop Library soon. Read, listen, and enjoy!
In Ms. Craig's class, students are engaging in Writing Workshop which is a way of teaching that guides students to be authentic, independent writers who choose their own topics and are in control of their work. Ms. Craig teaches specific lessons to guide students to craft with fluency, voice, engaging and developed ideas, and clear structure. In writing workshop classrooms, students learn to independently use the conventions of writing like spacing, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
As we know from research, these writing skills are developed over time. As second graders, we are still working on honing our craft and our editing skills. this work is our own and we hope that our mistakes do not distract from our message. Thank you for reading with a forgiving eye. We will continue to learn, write, and publish our work for authentic readers, our motivation for getting our stories out there!
Thank you for reading these books, inspired by Mo Willem's Pigeon books. The authors of these books are second graders in Ms. Craig's class at Bastrop IDS's Emile Elementary School.
