As Mayor, one of the key responsibilities defined in our City Charter is to make appointments to the City’s Boards & Commissions.  I believe very strongly that our boards and commissions must reflect our growing and changing community while having the appropriate talent and expertise needed to successfully meet the challenges before it.  With Council’s support, we have made significant strides toward that end over the last few years.  I am committed to continuing that effort into the future.

As I interact with citizens on a daily basis, I am often asked how can people get involved or volunteer.  One of my favorite responses is to encourage them to serve on a board or commission.  This site will list all of the Boards & Commissions,  outline their purpose, and anticipated time commitment.  In addition, the City is hosting the second annual “Volunteer Fair” to provide you with an opportunity to meet the Board & Commission Chairs, hear personally about the work each board or commission is currently focused on or will be working on in the near future, and ask any questions you may have.  My hope is that not only will you will attend the Volunteer Fair, but will complete an application to apply for the Boards & Commissions that most interest you.  This Volunteer Fair will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Bastrop Convention Center.  In addition, there will be more than 20 non-profit organizations represented as well who are also looking for volunteers to help them fulfill their mission and meet the needs of our citizens.

Again, I look forward to seeing you at the Volunteer Fair on July 16th!

How the Volunteer

Fair Works

The evening of July 16, representatives of the City of Bastrop’s 13 Boards and Commissions AND twenty or more of the local community service nonprofit organizations will be on hand at the Convention Center to answer your questions about its role in building a better community and how you can become a part of that process.

It’s great shopping:  each person attending will be able to “shop” organizations and opportunities of interest. Each City Board and nonprofit organization will have a table in the Convention Center ballroom; signs will help attendees readily locate organizations.

It’s one-on-one:  each table will be “staffed” by representatives of a specific organization…A great opportunity for you to talk individually with a representative, explore an organization’s purposes, programs, plans, and volunteer needs.

It’s all in one place:  the participating Boards, Commissions and organizations are at the heart of citizen involvement in this community. Lots of great people with one shared goal—to help shape Bastrop’s future.

Participating

Nonprofits

At the heart of Bastrop’s vitality as a community is not only the framework provided by local government and its volunteers but also by the many hundreds of citizens who join in support of local nonprofits that make Bastrop a caring, cohesive community.  Opportunities abound…from assisting with a single event or occasional volunteering to ongoing participation in an organization’s programming.

Find your place in our community!

These nonprofits will be available to answer your questions about their organizations and what it is they do, and how you can become a part of that mission!
