Bastrop Country Teen Court has been serving Bastrop County communities since 1996, when it first began operation. Since its inception in 1996, the number of referrals has steadily risen from 36 in that first year to over 150 in 2004.

Youth, who are first offenders and who choose teen court as a way of keeping their record clean, are required to perform community service, serve from one to three terms as peer jurors, attend a mandatory seminar provided by a licensed counselor on how to make better choices, and any other sentencing that the peer jury may impose. Upon completion of the sentencing requirements within the prescribed 90-day time frame, the coordinator sends a completion notice to the court from which they were referred. Those who choose not to comply with the sentencing requirements have their cases returned to the referring court as "incomplete" and are back where they started, except with a fine of up to $500.00 plus court costs, and a police record.

Community service is performed at not for profit agencies; local, county or state entities; churches, schools, or by donating blood. There are many choices a defendant can make in order to fulfill the community service requirements, and a four page listing of community service sites is provided to the defendant on the night of trial. We appreciate all the local agencies that work with us and allow our defendants to do community service for them.
