The Department continues to provide law enforcement services to the Bastrop Independent School District by providing two School Resource Officers. They can be seen patrolling school zones, parking lots, hallways and lunchrooms during the nine-month school year.

Veteran Officer, Tamera Brown, and newcomer, David Repka, provide law enforcement services to the seven school campuses located throughout the city. The two officers are primarily assigned to the High School and West Campus where the population has soared to 2,060 students. This number does not include administrators, teachers and other staff members. Bastrop High School is expected to reach 5A during the coming year.

The Department and School District continue to benefit from grant funds used to pay the salary of one School Resource Officer for the past three years. Funding for that position is due to expire January of 2004, at which time the District will pay 75% of the officers total salary, and the City will pickup up the remaining 25%. School Resource Officers are re-assigned to regular patrol duties during student holidays and summer vacations increasing our patrol staff to eleven officers.

The School District provides a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria with over 117,000 miles and a 1991 Chevy Caprice with over 109,000 miles to the two officers. The age, high mileage and climbing maintenance costs suggest that the vehicles will need to be replaced in the coming year. The District also pays the fuel cost for the two vehicles.

Officer's Brown and Repka were involved in a number of student activities throughout the year. Some of those presentations included Red Ribbon Week, Police Station Tours, Student Behavior and Citizenship programs, Halloween Safety programs to the Elementary and Intermediate School students, and book reading to students during Black History Week.

Records indicate the School Resource officers responded to approximately 187 reported criminal offenses on campuses between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2003 compared to 207 during the same reporting period for 2002.
