The Bastrop Police Department Chaplain Program began
under the leadership of Chief B.R. Anderson in 1997. The first
Chaplin was Pastor Charles Whitmire formerly of the Calvary Baptist
Church. Our current Chief Chaplain is Reverend Henry Biar pastor
of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Today we have twelve chaplains
who volunteer their time to the police department and the community.
The purpose of the Volunteer Police Chaplain Program
is to provide more sensitive responses to the public in times
of crisis and to provide members of the Department with any personal
assistance they may require. There are ten chaplains who volunteer
to take calls on a twenty-four hour, seven-day rotation. The Police
Chaplain makes his services available to Department personnel
when they are burdened with personal problems affecting their
professional abilities. The Police Chaplains also assist Department
officials notifying member's families and the general public in
the event of serious injury or death. They also assist Department
officials during major emergency incidents, such as major disturbances,
disasters, major accidents and offering prayer at City Council
meetings.
